Bulawayo Junior Council successfully holds a 52 km walk

More than 90 students participated in a 52km fundraising walk hosted by the Bulawayo Junior Council on Saturday.
The event, supported by the NANGO Western Region and Unicef saw children from various schools in Bulawayo walking from Ascot Shopping Centre in Bulawayo to Chipangali and back.
Junior Council Mayoress Michaela Farquhar described the event as a great success thanking the participants for the high spirit of commitment they demonstrated.
"This is a great achievement and credit to my colleagues for a job well done as well as the great support from the Western Region (NANGO) and Unicef", said Farquhar
However, NANGO Western Region could not immediately disclose the amount raised from the event although MARS chipped in with medical support of two ambulances, medical staff and kit.
Western Region Coordinator Mgcinumuzi Mpofu said the partnership with Junior Council was a positive step towards working with children and promoting their participation on development processes.
"As NANGO we have a project called Child National Friendly Budgeting Initiative (CNFBI) where we work with children on budgetary issues so as to come up with a national budget that caters for the interests and needs of the children", said Mpofu.
He added that the success of the walk was a pointer to the commitment and spirit exhibited by the children to empower themselves and the communities they come from.
Addressing participants after the event at Ascot Shopping Centre, Member of Parliament for Nkulumane Constituency Honourable Thamsanqa Mahlangu said the success of the event was evidence of commitment by the Junior Council.
He urged the students to keep up the spirit and hard work for them to be exemplary and hardworking leaders of tomorrow. Some students were mostly affected by muscle cramps with no cases of collapsing being reported.
Bulawayo Mayor , His Worship Thaba Moyo could not make his opening remarks due to other commitments.
NANGO is the umbreall body of NGOs in Zimbabwe with an estimated more than two thousand members involved in various diverse development work across Zimbabwe.
