The government has urged local producers to add value to their products to be competitive regionally and record higher profit margins.

Addressing hundreds of people who converged at Mutoko Centre for the launch of First Choice Wholesale, the Minister of Small to Medium Enterprises and Cooperative Development, Sithembiso Nyoni said local communities should process their produce into finished products for the benefit of their communities.

Mashonaland East Governor and Resident Minister, Aeneas Chigwedere said partnerships between the business community will create a better life for Mutoko communities through the availability of locally produced goods.

Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development, Dr Olivia Muchena said value addition in horticulture is critical for the Mutoko community to realise their full potential, and this can be achieved through the setting up of locally-owned factories.

First Choice Wholesales are managed by the Central Agricultural Co-operatives Union and they are mainly stationed in rural communities.

The cooperative has over 462 000 people and deals with locally produced products as a marketing avenue for small to medium enterprises.

The launch in Mutoko comes a few months after the launch of a similar wholesale by Robert Mugabe in Mt Darwin.
