Kombo Moyana dies

Zimbabwe's first black central bank governor Kombo James Moyana has died.

Moyana, who was at the helm of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe between 1983 and 1993, succumbed to Covid-19.
Dr Moyana's death was confirmed by members of his church the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe (UCCZ).

"Dear UCCZ Church Family.

"It is with a heavy heart that I am informing you that last night we lost one of us at UCCZ Eastlea Dr Kombo James Moyana exRBZ Governor passed on to Glory last night. He was in Hospital. He succumbed to Covid 19."

Moyana initially joined the Reserve Bank as deputy head of the institution in 1983 following his appointment by the then Prime Minister, Robert Mugabe. He eventually headed the Reserve Bank towards the expiry of his second term before retiring in 1993. After some years outside of public office, Kombo Moyana was appointed as chair of the sovereign wealth fund, a board set up with the drive to ensure the financing of ZimAsset.
