3 Zimbabweans get appointed to Rugby Africa sub-committees

Three Zimbabwean sports administrators are making inroads on the continent after being appointed into Rugby Africa sub-committees.

Headlining the appointments is Zimbabwe Rugby Union president Aaron Jani who will chair the Rugby Academy Sub-committee for the continental body.

Zimbabwe Rugby Referees President Abigail Kawodza is also part of the cast after making it to the sub-committee in charge of player welfare, while Chairperson of Zimbabwe Women Rugby Abigail Mnikwa is now part of Rugby Africa's committee on leadership and training.

The appointments have been described as a milestone achievement and a welcome development towards the growth and development of rugby in the country, especially the women's game.

"These appointments have been long overdue and is a welcome development for Zimbabwe and Africa in terms of rugby. For years we've been trying to knock on the doors and get into decision making positions especially with the strive towards women rugby.

"It has been our plan going forward where we want to see more women getting into decision making positions at a level which is pertinently relevant to the game," said Sifiso Made, Zimbabwe Rugby Union CEO.

The sub-committees' main objective is to nurture development of the game on the continent and ensure a systematic progression of nations in terms of their governance structures and performance of teams.

Meanwhile, the appointment of the trio comes barely two days after one of the country's brightest rugby prospects, Thabani Maguranyanga completed a dream move to top French rugby club, ASM Clermont Auvergne.

The speedster who is son of former Warriors fitness trainer, Gerald Maguranyanga, arrived from St Stithians Boys College in South Africa.
