FINANCE minister Mthuli Ncube has heaped praise on the World Food Programme (WFP) for providing clean and safe water for schools in support of the government's School Feeding Programme ahead of schools re-opening next week.

Appearing virtually before a parliamentary portfolio committee on Budget, Finance and Economic Development enquiry into Covid-19 financing last week, Ncube said WFP had drilled boreholes at several schools.

"We are working closely with development partners in mobilising resources between treasury and the ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. WFP and other partners are drilling boreholes across our schools and supporting the government this way.

"Basically the rule is a school cannot open if there is no access to water, if there is no access to water in terms of piped water there has to be some borehole facilities drilled or at least some water should be provided, and this is universal," he said.

Health authorities have a target for the provision of water in schools before the reopening of school in a bid to avert the spread of the Covid-19 in schools and learning institutions.
