A BULAWAYO man is lucky to be alive when a teenager who owed him $4 assaulted him with a brick over the debt.

Mr Bekezela Ngulube (29), of 2353 Emakhandeni suburb and employed as an electrician at Peter Construction in Kelvin North, had asked for his $4, which 19-year-old Bukhulu Nkosi owed him.

Nkosi was on Monday convicted on his own plea of guilty of assault when he appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Richard Ramaboea.

He was sentenced to 30 months in prison, but would serve an effective two years after six months of the sentence were suspended on condition he does not within five years commit an offence involving assault.

Nkosi told the court that he assaulted Mr Ngulube in self defence because he had picked a quarrel with him.

On 12 September, Mr Ngulube was coming from Mahadebe Beer Garden in the suburb when he met Nkosi.

Mr Ngulube asked for his money but instead Nkosi slapped him on the cheek.

He then picked a concrete brick and hit him once on the forehead. Nkosi went on to kick Mr Ngulube and he fell down and started bleeding. A report was made to the police resulting in the arrest of Nkosi.
