TWO Zimbabwe Saints Football Club members appeared in court yesterday facing charges of theft involving $6 000.

Gibson Homela (65), of House Number 646 Mahatshula and Felix Dzumbunu (47), a former chairman of the club were not formally charged with theft when they appeared before Senior Western Division regional magistrate, Owen Tagu.

They were each granted $100 bail and will next appear in court on 14 November for trial.

In 2010 Zimbabwe Saints had a contract with Evans Rusike which expired in December 2011. The player was then given a clearance letter stating that he could join a team of his choice.

During that period, the player was managed by Omega Sibanda, the manager of Links  International.

Sibanda then negotiated with Hwange Football Club for the player to join the club after the club had shown interest in the player.

Sibanda and the club agreed on a fee of $18 000 and the club paid a deposit of $9 000, which was deposited into Sibanda's account and that the balance was to be paid later.

Homela and Dzumbunu then got wind that Hwange Football Club was due to pay for the player and allegedly sent an email to Hwange Football Club allegedly stating that Rusike was a Zimbabwe Saints Football Club player and not Sibanda's and allegedly directed Hwange Football Club to deposit money into the Zimbabwe Saints Football account with ZB Bank.

Hwange Football Club deposited $6 000 into the Zimbabwe Saints Football Club account.

Sibanda then made a follow up on the outstanding amount and was told that the money had been paid into the Zimbabwe Saints Football Club account on 18 August 2012.

Sibanda then reported Homela and Dzumbunu to the police leading to their arrest and the freezing of the Zimbabwe Saints account.

Admire Chikwayi appeared for the State and Charles Paul Moyo, of Moyo and Nyoni Legal Practitioners defended Homela and Dzumbunu.
