A 27-YEAR-OLD Pumula South resident died after he was struck with a stone on the back of the head by an unknown assailant who went on to rape his 17-year-old sister.
The 27-year-old man and his sister were walking in a bushy area between Pumula East and Pumula South when the assailant pounced on them at about 7pm on Monday.
The unknown assailant also allegedly searched the man and took away a cellphone.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspe-ctor Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident.
"We are investigating a case where a man was killed and his younger sister, who was in his company, raped.
"We are appealing to members of the public who might have information about the suspect to assist the police," said Insp Moyo.
He said those with information can contact the police on hotline numbers (09) 885479, 999 or 995 or use police suggestion boxes.
The girl's aunt said she got a call from a stranger who told her that her niece was at Pumula Police Station.
"I was phoned by a stranger at about 8pm who said I should go to the police station where I would meet my niece. We found her at the police station and she told us that her brother had been killed and she had been raped," said the aunt.
"My nephew was hit with a stone on the head and when he fell down, the man searched him and took away a cellphone before dragging the sister to a secluded place where he raped her."
Family members said they were failing to come to terms with the incident as they were preparing for a wedding scheduled for Saturday.
The deceased, who was blessed with a child two months ago, was supposed to be the best man at his brother's wedding.
The brother is based in South Africa and was expected in the country for the wedding this week.
