BULAWAYO City Council requires $46 million to complete the servicing of the Hlalani Kuhle housing scheme in Cowdray Park, where close to 12 000 housing Units have been built in the past few years.
Cowdray Park Councillor Collet Ndlovu yesterday told NewsDay that council needed the money for infrastructure such as roads, water and sewer pipes in the Hlalani area.
"The city council has proposed that each household should pay $50 every month for five years," he said.
"We thus expect the residents to bear with the city council and co-operate for the developments the area."
But Ndlovu said some-residents could not afford the amount being asked by council.
"This $46 million figure will not change as this was the quotation brought to the city council," he said.
"If the residents do not co-operate, development is bound to take long because instead of the project being completed in five years, it will take 10 years or more."
He said the local authority had not done anything since taking over the project from government recently.
"We are also looking forward to the donors who might want to help with the servicing of the area, but at the moment no donor has come forward," Ndlovu said.
Mayor Thaba Moyo said $19 million was needed urgently to service the area.
"The city council at the moment needs $19 million immediately and the $46 million is the total amount that is needed to complete the servicing of the area," he said.
