LOCAL Government, Urban and Rural Development deputy minister Sesei Zvidzai has accused the Cabinet Committee on Change of Place Names of delaying the re-naming of Bulawayo Main Street after the late Vice-President Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo.

Zvidzai was responding to complaints by the Bulawayo City Council that the government had not responded to its request to re-name the street, which was made five years ago.

"Some people could be delaying the process with certain motives," he said.

"I agree the council submitted its request. The whole thing is being delayed by the Cabinet Committee on Change of Place Names and due to that, the council has to wait.

The deputy minister from the MDC-T said such delays gave impetus to calls for devolution of power.

"We cannot have a situation where people fail to honour their people because the matter is being handled by a so-called national committee. That is why we want devolution," Zvidzai said.

The committee is chaired by Vice-President John Nkomo.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Province governor Cain Mathema recently claimed government gave the local authority the go-ahead to rename the city a long time ago.
