A 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his friend following a dispute over property.
The incident, which was confirmed by Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo occurred on
Tuesday at about 9am at Umvutshwa Compound in Umguza District.
A neighbour who spoke to Chronicle on condition of anonymity said Morris Sibanda (32) and Robert Nyoni (30) were fighting over property belonging to Sibanda when the tragic incident happened.
"The two used to work together in Jotsholo before coming back to Umvutshwa Compound. On New Year's Day, Sibanda approached Nyoni and demanded his belongings, which included clothes, plates and blankets among other things.
"The two started arguing and Nyoni was saying he did not take the belongings. Sibanda hit Nyoni with a metal object and Nyoni picked up a piece of wood and hit Sibanda on the head. Sibanda fell to the ground and died," said the neighbour.
Insp Moyo said the matter was still under investigation and urged members of the public to desist from engaging in violence.
He said besides the tragic incident, Bulawayo recorded few cases of crime on New Year's Day, following the warning by police against rowdy and unacceptable behaviour.
"Besides the disturbing murder incident, the New Year holiday was peaceful as police officers were out in full force to curb crime in all parts of the province.
"We, however, arrested an 18-year-old man for skidding on New Year's Eve along Robert Mugabe Way and 11th Avenue. The man was fined $20 for skidding and another $20 for driving without a driver's licence.
"The man's father, who is the owner of the car was fined $20 for allowing a person without a licence to drive his car," said Insp Moyo.
