A Nkulumane suburb woman in Bulawayo is in pain after half of her body was burnt by her husband who reportedly threw a burning paraffin stove at her.

The woman, Elizabeth Dzatsvaga was allegedly burnt by her husband Edmond Chituma sometime late last year. It is understood that the two had been having problems since the woman gave birth. Chituma was reportedly denying having a hand in the pregnancy.

Dzatsvaga, who is also a police officer made various attempts to assure the man that he was responsible for the pregnancy. On the near tragic day, Chituma got home late and found his wife having fallen asleep without preparing a meal.

It is reported that Dzatsvaga woke up and but both the electric stove and paraffin stove on. This is because only one of the four plates on the electric stove was functioning.

While the woman was cooking, Chituma is said to have asked a number of questions about the baby. The two then started quarreling. It is alleged that Chituma got infuriated and got hold of the burning paraffin stove before throwing it towards the woman. The female police officer screamed in agony as her clothes had caught fire.

The burning quickly spread to the woman's thighs, stomach, hands, neck, face and arms. Noticing this, the man rushed outside and filled a 20-litre container with water and poured in on his wife. The water did the trick but the damage had already been imparted on the woman.

An ambulance ferried Dzatsvaga to hospital. Chitima was subsequently arrested and dragged to the dock on a physical abuse charge where he appeared before Western Commonage magistrate, Mrs Themba Chimiso. He was remanded out of custody to 14 January on US$100 bail.
