A policeman based in Bulawayo allegedly lost a total of 5,000 South African Rands to a woman he was dancing with in a night club during a drinking spree on New Year's Eve.

Bulawayo magistrate Mr Tawanda Muchemwa heard this at the appearance of Bridget Sibanda, who is now facing a charge of theft, after she allegedly stole the money from her dancing partner for the night.

Sibanda (21), of 1198 Old Magwegwe was allegedly at a night club where she was joined by Tendai Nyamana (27) of No. 55 Stops Hostel, Ross Camp and the two started dancing. The incident occurred at Club Royal Nightclub at Midnight on New Year's Eve. Sibanda is however, denying the charge saying she only danced with Nyamana and did not even get close to him. She was remanded in custody to 16 January for trial.

The State would want to prove that on the New Year's Eve at about 12.45am, Nyamana and Sibanda hooked up and started drinking and dancing together. Sibanda then allegedly searches the complainant and stole a wallet, which was in the side pocket of the policeman's trousers.

The court heard that after stealing the money, she then gave the wallet, which had a police identity card to another patron, who is still at large and disappeared into the night. The incident allegedly happened in the clear view of another patron, a woman identified as Ms Polite Chiropa, who was in the nightclub.

Ms Chiropa then allegedly informed officer Nyamana that he had been pick-pocketed. The court was told that Nyamana started looking for Sibanda and the unidentified man whom she had given the 'filthy rich' wallet, but could not locate them. A report was made to the polioce leading to Sibnda's arrest.

Mr Mazwi Goto is representing the State.
