TWO Nkulumane men have been sentenced to an effective 10 years imprisonment for illegally reconnecting electricity after power supplies to their home had been cut by the authorities for default of payment.
Sindiso Sibanda and Nqobani Mhlanga were convicted on their own plea of guilt when they appeared before Western Commonage Court magistrate Mr Shepherd Munjanja on charges of contravening Section 3(b) of the Electricity Amendment Act Number 12 of 2007(Chapter 13:09).
Prosecutor Mr Fanuel Chokuda told the court that on March 28 this year, power supplies to Mhlanga's residence were disconnected by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company for non-payment. However, Mhlanga and his colleague reconnected supplies later that day.
Luck ran out for them after a ZETDC employee caught them red-handed.
A police report was made, leading to their arrest.
In passing sentence, magistrate Munjanja said a long jail term would be deterrent.
