In a bizarre incident, a sangoma was caught treating a patient at Mpilo Centra Hospital. The sangoma was clad in civilian attire.
The alleged incident occurred on Thursday last week at a female ward. According to sources, the sangoma identified as Dumisani Mhlanga undertook the exercise at the instigation of the patient's relatives. Mhlanga reportedly hails from Gokwe.
It is reported that Mhlanga was caught during the evening visit while applying medicine to some cuts he had made (ukucaba / kutema nyora) on the woman's abdominal area, wrist and shoulders.
"There was a nurse who was attending to a patient whose drip was running out. While she was replacing it she noticed the traditional healer applying a black substance on the patient," said the source.
The patient, whose identity was not released, had been admitted to the hospital with a stomach ache. The nurse is said to have alerted her superiors who confronted Mhlanga and the patient's family.
"They became aggressive and said they could do anything they wanted because modern medicine was failing to heal their relative," said the source.
The authorities later handed over the matter to the hospital's security details who dragged the sangoma and the patient's relatives out of the ward. Reports say the sangoma and the family members were handed over to the police where they were later released without being charged.
