In a bizarre incident that occurred in the city at TM hyper, a foetus (left) was found dumped under a seat in a commuter omnibus which was travelling from Mpilo Central Hospital to the city centre in a suspected case of baby dumping.
In an interview with Sunday News, Bulawayo Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo, confirmed the incident saying they were still investigating the case of a dumped foetus that was found under the back seat of a commuter omnibus.
"We are handling a case whereby a suspected human foetus was found dumped in a kombi at TM Hyper loading zone and no arrests have been made so far," Insp Moyo said.
The commuter omnibus driver, Mr Nkosilathi Moyo, and his counterpart, Mr Prince Moyo, discovered the foetus yesterday morning after passengers complained of a bad odour.
"There was a strange smell in the vehicle and passengers were complaining, saying it smelt like a dead rat. We then discovered that it was a dumped foetus wrapped in a plastic bag, which we identified by its legs," Prince said.
Commuters gathered around the vehicle to catch a glimpse of the corpse.
The vice chairperson for the Barbourfields Commuter Omnibus Association, Mr Oliver Ndlovu, said they had already reported the case to West Commonage Police Station.
"We have reported the case to the West Commonage Police Station that a dead baby was found under the seat of a kombi, in the morning," he said.
A witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she was still in shock about the incident and hoped that the culprit would be brought to book.
"I am shocked about this incident and I really hope the culprit will be arrested. We cannot continue living with all these incidents and such people deserve to be arrested," she said.
