Filabusi man doing a fabulous job for his village

A FOOTBALL club's used shirts have helped dozens of children in a poverty-stricken village in Zimbabwe.
Gilmorton Junior Football Club donated the shirts to former Zimbabwean Dumi Moyo, who took them to his father's village of Ntsoma in the Filabusi district after seeing first-hand the poverty there during a visit in 2009.
Under-13s coach Peter Bennett heard about the appeal for items through his dad Michael Bennett, who attends the same church as Mr Moyo in Coventry. The club was quick to donate dozens of last season's shirts, which were added to lorry-load of items which Mr Moyo had collected to take to Ntsoma.
Andy Hone, chairman of the Gilmorton Juniors side, said: "Peter is our under-13s coach and his son Louis also plays for the team.
"We were glad to be able to assist and donated some of our previous seasons' football kit.
"The village has been devastated by the ongoing events in Zimbabwe, so all the donations were hugely appreciated by the villagers."
The visit to Zimbabwe took place in January.
Mr Hone added: "Though we might think times for us are in the UK are difficult, it is hard to imagine the lives of those living in such poverty elsewhere.
"Gilmorton Junior Football Club was glad to help out such a worthy cause and I'm sure the kit will be put to very good use by people in the village."
Mr Moyo said he had organised the trip using his own money and was not part of any charitable effort in Zimbabwe.
He added: "I visited my father in 2009 because he is ill and was shocked to find that the people are so poor and often couldn't afford clothes.
"I decided to do whatever I could and I'm grateful for the donations from the club.
"The help I gave was just a drop in the ocean. Thousands of people arrived when I distributed the items and there was no way I could help them all."
Mr Moyo is trying to arrange another trip to Zimbabwe to take more items in future, but needs financial support or sponsorship to do so.
