A maid who was reported to have wrapped a baby in a blanket and put it into a drawer resulting in its death told a court that she did so because the baby was making TOO MUCH NOISE for her.
The woman, Violet Moyo (20), confessed in her police warned and cautioned statement that she was responsible fo the baby's death. Moyo was dragged before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Themba Chimiso facing murder charges.
The magistrate, acting on advice from the investigating officer, denied the woman bail and advised her to apply to the High Court is she so wished. The investigating officer noted that Moyo was facing a serious offence and that there was likelihood that she could abscond. He also observed that there was a high risk that the woman might be subjected to public 'lynching' is she was set free.
Moyo told the court that she had decided to put the baby in a drawer because it was making too much noise for her.
"I didn't know what to do because the baby was making too much noise. That's why I stashed the tot in a drawer," said Moyo.
The court heard that on 1 February at about 7pm, Moyo was left in custody of the 10-month-old child by its parents. It is reported that Moyo then fed the baby with porridge. Moments later, the woman put the baby to rest and went about her other duties. It is said that the baby started crying and Moyo tried to calm it but her efforts were in vain.
Supposedly incensed by the baby's cries, Moyo is alleged to have wrapped it in a blanket and put it in a drawer. She allegedly went on to watch movies on television. As nature would have it, the baby suffocated due to lack of oxygen. After about three hours of total silence, Moyo reportedly went back to 'check' on the baby.
She, however, got the shock of her life after realising that the baby had died. The maid is said to have devised a way of covering up her tracks. It is said that she then put the baby between a headboard and the bed so as to look like it had fallen while sleeping. The 20-year-old helper allegedly later made second thoughts and removed the body from there before placing the lifeless body on top of the bed.
After some moments, she called neighbours and the baby's parents were called in. On being questioned, Moyo said she did not know what had happened to the baby. A report was made to the police and that is when she opened up.
