Progress on the construction of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Express (Airport Road) is being stalled by the existence of live underground and overhead electricity cables, an official with the construction company has disclosed.
While some of the cables have been moved, the bulk are yet to be relocated. Water, sewer and optic fibres for communication also need to be moved as well as perimeter walls for some properties.
West properties managing director Mr Michael Van Blerk confirmed yesterday that while work was underway - the speedy completion of the dualisation project was being hampered by electricity cables.
"Seventy percent of this corridor has Zesa cables that have to be moved.
"It is the delay in the movement of the cables that is stalling progress," he said.
Live cables exist on the intersection of the road with Dieppe Road, George Road, Harare Drive, St Patricks and near the entrance to the Harare International Airport.
Government has issued a directive that the road should be usable by end of July ahead of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation conference to be held in August in the resort town of Victoria Falls. Hundreds of tourists are expected in the country for the premier tourism event.
Mr Van Blerk said the stretch of the road from the airport up to Dieppe Road would be in use by July.
