Seventy percent of Bulawayo City Council's network covering 2 100km is in a poor state and the council needs $600 million to rehabilitate the road network over a 10-year period.

According to a council report, Engineering Services director Simela Dube said 1 400km of the city's road network was in a bad shape, while 600km was in a fair condition, NewsDay reported.

A Road Condition Survey (2012) conducted to determine the state of the roads revealed that $69 million was required annually to rehabilitate the roads.

"This implied that the majority of our roads required heavy rehabilitation works to get them back to acceptable conditions," reads part of the council report.

"The level of capital investments required over the 10-year period was estimated to be $691 million. This translated to about $69 million per year."
Council said the road branch required $12,5 million this year.

The bad state of the city and the country's major roads has been blamed for most of the fatal accidents.

The majority of the country's roads have outlived their lifespan by more than 30 years.
