A one-year-old boy from Mzilikazi high-density suburb in Bulawayo was found hanging from the branch of a tree at a neighbouring yard last Wednesday afternoon.
Residents in Mzilikazi and family members are still to come to terms with the mysterious death of the one- year-ten-months-old Alisha Banda who was found hanging by shoelaces from a low-lying branch of a mango tree.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the death of young Alisha but could not disclose the circumstances that led to the death of the toddler saying investigations were under way.
"I can confirm the death of the toddler but I can't comment further than that as investigations are under way and I can't say the cause of death as we are still waiting for post-mortem results,'' Insp Moyo said.
The toddler was buried at West Park Cemetery yesterday.
"I am still to come to terms with the death of my child because it's somehow suspicious and mysterious. The last time I saw him alive was when other slightly older children he usually played with came with him at home after he had soiled himself. I changed his pants and left him to go and play with the others.
The mother, Mrs Tendai Mabika-Banda, who was still visibly shaken by the loss of her only child, said children from the neighbourhood brought the boy who was motionless and she tried to resuscitate him but failed then she rushed to the hospital where he was certified dead. Family members interviewed by the Sunday News after the burial, suspected foul play in the death of young Alisha.
"I am still puzzled about the death because we are actually failing to ascertain its cause. Of course he had a mark around his neck suggesting that he was strangled but by who, by himself or it was done by the other kids?'' said the aunt, Mrs Midia Mabika.
