In a desperate attempt to escape mob justice and arrest, a vegetable thief from Matsheumhlope suburb in Bulawayo reportedly ran naked, with his manhood dangling up and down, as he pretended to be a wizard, much to the bafflement of Bulawayo residents.

The suspected vegetable thief, Elicko Muleya (20) who stunned residents with his weird antics of trying to evade arrest was wanted in connection with a case of stealing vegetables from a neighbour's house.

As fate would have it, his plan did not yield its intended results when a horde of suspicious residents pursued him and apprehended him leading to his arrest.

It is reported that on 4 February, Muleya, who stays at No. 7 Whyne Road in Matsheumhlope, went to Patricia Chikowe's house and stole vegetables worth US$35. His luck ran out when he was reportedly spotted by men who became suspicious and tried to apprehend him but he escaped leaving the vegetables which were stashed in a sack. It is further reported that Muleya was positively identified by the two men who later alerted the owner of the vegetables.

Last week, it is alleged that Chikowe, accompanied by a police officer, proceeded to Muleya's place of residence were they found him naked in his bedroom. The policeman who appeared to be unmoved by his 'priceless birthday suit', handcuffed Muleya. He later pretended to be putting on his clothes but [produced a knife and stabbed the cop on the wrist.

Following the frenzied stabbing, Muleya bolted out of the house, again naked thereby instilling fear in other residents who attempted to apprehend him by purporting to be a wizard. According to a resident, Muleya's 'sexual hosepipe' juggled in all directions as he was running away naked.

However, some fearless residents reportedly pursued him and apprehended him. For the offence, he was dragged before Bulawayo magistrate, Mr Tawanda Muchemwa facing two counts of theft and assault.

Muleya pleaded not guilty to both counts and was remanded in custody for continuation of his trial.
