Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai today urged Bulawayo residents to go and vote yes on Saturday as the Constitution agenda is the brainchild of the MDC.
Addressing over 2000 Bulawayo residents at the Large City Hall, Tsvangirai said the new Constitution is a new covenant that is set to promote the rights of every Zimbabwean.
"The Lancaster House Constitution was a ceasefire document and not a democratic document. Zanu PF used it as a power transfer tool. As a result, after 18 amendments the Constitution brought our nation to its knees," Tsvangirai said.
He added that the new Constitution will produce a new value system where there is transfer of power at set terms, equality and security for all Zimbabweans. "The new Constitution sets out the Bill of Rights which for the first time expands people's rights in totality. People shall henceforth be able to freely express their opinion, associate, and move freely without fear," Tsvangirai said.
He said the new Charter guarantees rights to women, children, the disabled, people with special needs and that all people shall be equal before the law and shall be accorded equal opportunities in jobs.
"There shall be a devolved State. Everything shall be done at provincial level. We shall not have (Ignatius) Chombo firing democratically elected people willy-nilly. Provinces shall be more accountable and resources distributed equally," Tsvangirai said.
He castigated Zanu PF who through the Mines and Mining Development minister, Obert Mpofu are looting State resources while the rest of Zimbabweans are suffering.
"Ask Obert Mpofu how he managed to buy a bank when yesterday he had nothing. I hear he has bought almost half of Bulawayo."
"Voting yes is a curtain raiser. Go and vote yes," Tsvangirai said.
Tsvangirai urged pastors to support the 'Vote Yes' campaign and signed a pledge for peace before and after elections at the Presbyterian Church in the city centre.
