THE National University of Science and Technology (Nust) has been hit by a spate of vandalism cases, prompting the institution to adopt the closed circuit television (CCTV) system.

In an interview yesterday, Nust's director of information and public relations Mr Felix Moyo said it was difficult to quantify the  extent  of  vandalism at the university, but there was a need to make serious efforts in curtailing it.

"Nust is a public institution and as such it is reliant on the taxpayers' money, hence it is our responsibility to ensure that public property is protected by all means," said Mr Moyo.

He said it was important that the property was safeguarded and as such they were making efforts to implement the CCTV technology. Nust has since invited tenders for companies who could install CCTV.

"CCTV is more consistent than our security personnel, there are cases where sometimes the personnel will be far away from instances of vandalism, and hence the CCTV system will tighten security," said Mr Moyo.

He said CCTV would ensure that no one damaged property and got away with it because it would record acts of vandalism on camera.
