The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Republic Police, have intensified awareness campaigns on road safety as part of a programme to reduce carnage on the roads, especially during the holidays.
The awareness campaigns began at Mbare Musika bus terminus where there was inspection of vehicles for defects, overloading and distribution of flyers educating the public on their rights as passengers.
Product Development and Marketing Manager for the TSCZ, Mr Ernest Muchena said the campaigns are now done during every major holiday to ensure that people do not lose lives due to road carnage which can be avoided.
He said most of the vehicles had to be stopped from travelling to the rural areas because of worn out tyres.
"We are making vehicle inspection on all vehicles and we have stopped other with worn out tyres from travelling to the various areas. We are saying bus operators should invest in their buses which should be roadworthy. We cannot be losing lives because of reasons that can be avoided," said Mr Muchena.
The national acting traffic police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said transport operators should ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy as some which were impounded were not fit to travel on the roads.
"We have seen some vehicles that are not fit to transport people and these have been impounded. We will not tolerate any operator who risks killing people.
"This has to stop. All feeder roads are manned by police officers and any overloaded buses are not allowed to proceed," he said.
The traffic safety ambassador, Mrs Olivia Charamba said the passengers should know their rights and report any unruly behaviour by bus crews.
