Soldier assaults a civilian, fractures his jaw

A 26-year-old Bulawayo-based soldier, who assaulted a civilian and fractured his jaw after the victim had asked the accused to accompany him to Mkoba 6 Shopping Centre on Friday last week, has been fined $200.
Malvern Jakachira of Mkoba 11 was incensed when Gwatirinda Mahwembiri (35) asked to accompany him to Mkoba 6 after they had met at a road junction.
He assaulted the complainant with clenched fists on the face several times and kicked him on the right cheek.
For the offence, Gweru magistrate Sithembiso Ncube fined Jakachira, failure to which he would be jailed for two months.
A further six months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecuting, Yeukai Mugumba told the court that on the day in question the complainant in the company of Rebecca Phiri was walking from Mkoba 9 to Mkoba 6.
They met the accused who was in the company of his brother Sidney and they greeted them before complainant asked accused if he could join him to Mkoba 6.
Accused got angry and beat up the complainant with clenched fists on the face several times before kicking him once on the right cheek.
Complainant sustained a fractured lower jaw resulting in his two lower teeth shaking.
He struggled to open his mouth.
A report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of the soldier.
