A man from Lobengula suburb in Bulawayo was yesterday arrested for allegedly killing his nephew following a heated argument with his wife.
Thembani Sibanda (27) and his deceased nephew Mthokozisi Mbano (26) were reportedly involved in a heated argument on Saturday night, which later turned into a fist fight, after Sibanda found his wife crying and claimed to have been insulted by Mbano at their rented home in Old Lobengula.
By late yesterday, Sibanda and his wife had been picked up by police, while Mbano's lifeless body, which was found near Ikhwezi Bar, was taken to the mortuary by the police.
One of Mbano's friends said the two, Sibanda and Mbano, who were vendors at Basch Street Terminus, popularly known as Egodini, seriously injured each other during the fight.
"Sibanda arrived at home at around 9pm, where the three were staying together and found his wife, identified as MaMpohu, crying. She told her husband that Mbano has insulted her and an altercation between Sibanda and Mbano ensued and it developed into a fist fight. The two fought with fists, booted feet, logs and in the melee broke their landlord's windows and also injured each other," narrated the source.
The friend said Sibanda went and reported the matter to the police and left his nephew home. Mbano is said to have also left home and was found dead near Ikhwezi Bar yesterday morning.
"Mbano took his jacket and left home at about 11pm and I was told that he passed through my house looking for me, but I was not at home at that time (11pm). I was surprised when I heard neighbours saying he had been found dead near the bar. What is surprising is that Sibanda had sustained more serious injuries than Mbano. Sibanda even went to Mpilo Hospital where he was treated and discharged, but he has just been taken away by the police, together with his wife," said the friend.
The source said when police picked up Mbano's body, it had bruises and a deep cut on the head.
Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident and said Sibanda has since been arrested and is assisting police with investigations.
