A Bulawayo man, Brian Chada, has won the Telecel Win Big Promotion grand prize of a VW Amarok double cab truck, while a Ruwa woman, Mejury Chitaitayi, has won the last of the VW Polos being given away in the promotion.
When his name was called out at the grand draw prize-giving today (Friday), Mr Chada, who said he only started participating in the promotion last month, stood up with his hands in the air and walked towards the car that he had won.
Standing next to the car, Mr Chada said he was happy to finally have a car of his own, as he had been driving other people's cars up till then.
"Since the promotion started I had been receiving the invitations to enter the promotion but I continued to ignore them. It was only last month that I decided to start playing and I am happy I have won," he said.
He urged other people to take part in any future promotion.
"Don't ignore these," he said, adding that he now intended to take part in future promotions.
"I love Telecel because it gives back to its customers. If another promotion comes I will definitely play. Who wouldn't?" asked Mr Chada.
The last of the VW Polo winners, Mejury Chitaitayi, who was presented with her car at the same occasion, had also previously won a Samsung Galaxy S2 cellphone in the same promotion.
When the master of ceremonies, Telecel Zimbabwe branding and communications director Obert Mandimika, announced that a woman from Ruwa had won the last of the VW Polos, Ms Chitaitayi, guessing that it was herself could be seen smiling.
When her name was finally called out, she stood up and ran to the front where she was handed the keys to the car.
"I am so happy," said Ms Chitaitayi, who was visibly shaken as she stood next to the car she had won.
"After winning the cellphone I continued to play hoping I would win a car. But when I received the phone call to say I had won and should attend the grand draw today, I still never expected the prize to be a car. I just thought it would be one of these surprise prizes here," she said.
Like Mr Chada, Ms Chitaitayi urged other subscribers to take part in any similar promotions.
"Don't lose hope," she said. "You should keep playing and you will win."
"If there is another promotion I will definitely play again," she added.
Since the promotion began in December last year, Telecel has been giving away two Samsung Galaxy S2 cellphones every day and a VW Polo every fortnight. This culminated in the grand draw, which saw the grand prize of a VW Amarok being presented to Mr Chada from Bulawayo.
Apart from these daily and bi-weekly prizes, surprise prizes of DVD players, LCD Plasma televisions, digital cameras and Samsung Galaxy Y Pro cellphones were also unveiled at the grand draw and were presented to lucky winners.
"These surprise prizes are in recognition of the support that you have given us," said Mr Mandimika.
One of the surprise prize winners, Spencer Kabanda from Masvingo, said he was happy to have won a 32 inch Samsung LCD television.
"I came here with my family and it is going to be nice to watch television on this plasma television," said Mr Kabanda.
"I was hoping to drive back to Masvingo in a car but all the same this is a great prize," he said.
"It is only that I picked up on the promotion rather late. Maybe that is when I missed the opportunity. I started playing when the promotion started but I only became serious about it after I saw someone who had won a car," he said.
"If another promotion of this nature comes again it would be an understatement if I say I am going to play. I am going to invest in the next one," added Mr Kabanda.
A cellphone winner, Lizzy Kanengebiza, from Hatfield in Harare who has had a Telecel line since Telecle's inception, said she only started playing when she started hearing of people winning. Although she said she was happy to have won a cellphone, she would have loved to win a car.
"I wanted to win this car. Who doesn't want to drive themselves to wherever they want to go. It is a hassle to have to always ask other people to drive you where you want to go. Look at today, I asked my husband to accompany me here but he said he had to be somewhere at the same time.
"I am happy though to have won this cellphone but the car would have been even better," she said
"The second time I am going to win this one," she said pointing to the VW Polo that was won by Ms Chitaitayi.
"If you don't have a Telecel line you are lagging behind," she said. "From today I am going to set this cellphone aside (pointing to the one she was using) and will start to use this one," she said, lifting up the Samsung Galaxy S2 that she had won.
Participants who won prizes in the promotion came from all over the country, with some coming from as far as Wedza, Kariba, Bulawayo, Chinhoyi, Masvingo, Gweru and Mutare. Those who were not present to receive their prizes had them set aside for when they will be able to collect them.
The Win Big Promo is the latest and biggest in a series of Telecel promotions, the last of which saw a Bindura woman last year winning the grand prize of a Mazda BT-50 double cab and 189 other subscribers winning cellphones, laptops and a variety of other prizes.
"If you still do not have a Telecel line go and get one now and see what you have been missing out on," Mr Mandimika told those who attended the presentation.
"If you are on the Telecel network you are already a winner," Telecel Zimbabwe public
