WHOEVER coined the adage "an idle mind is the devil's workshop" seems to
have had a 45-year-old unemployed Bulawayo man from Thorngroove in mind
who stunned all and sundry when he allegedly chased away his mother
from the family house.
He claimed that the house was part of the estate, which was left in his custody by his late father.
As if that was not enough, the wayward son Martin West threatened to assault his mother,
Molly West (age not given) if she refused to take his orders.
Fearing for her life and subscribing to the rule of law, she went and reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of her son.
For the offence, Martin of Number 16 Sickle Bushy Road was arraigned before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Takunda Witness Mtetwa.
He was charged with physical abuse as defined in Section 3 (1) (a) of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter5:16.
He pleaded guilty and was convicted and sentenced to two months imprisonment which were suspended on condition that he completes 70 hours of unpaid labour at Mzilikazi Police Station.
Accusations against Martin are that he had a brush with the law when he refused to be abide by the fifth Biblical commandment, which advises one to honour his or her parents when he threatened to assault his mother.
It is reported that on 7 April at around 3pm Martin who had reportedly gone for binge came home and found his mother sitting in the living room.
It is reported that the boozed up Martin pointed fingers at his mother before he threatened to assault her for no apparent reason and a result a misunderstanding arose between the two.
The daring Martin, went on to order his mother to move out of the family house claiming that it was part of his estate which was left to him by his late father.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.
