THERE was drama on Sunday afternoon when armed police detectives raided a bar at a Bulawayo city hotel and arrested five patrons on unclear charges.

Criminal Investigation Department regional co-ordinator Assistant Commissioner Mavis Nkomo yesterday told NewsDay that she was not aware of the arrests.

"I have not received any report on the matter," Nkomo said.

However, according to witnesses, the five were discussing what appeared to be a "business deal" before the armed detectives pounced on them.

The witnesses said the police ordered the five to lie on the floor and the rest of the patrons remained glued to their seats as the drama unfolded.

"It appears the five - four males and one female - were discussing some business deal," said a witness.

"They were sitting separately at the far corner of the bar when the armed police raided the place.

"They barked that the five lie on their stomachs before handcuffing them and whisking them away.

"It appears the police suspected that whatever dealings the five were making, it was illegal given the way they pounced on them and also the fact that they were armed.

"In some cases, we have heard that the detectives wait for suspects to leave a public place before pouncing on them lest there is an exchange of gunfire so that other people are not affected or do not get in the line of fire."
