A 24-year-old man from Esigodini was on Sunday morning fatally stabbed with a bayonet by a rival suitor during a fight over a woman.
It is reported David Dunjana was butchered by Ndumiso Ndimande (31) when he confronted him for allegedly snatching his sweetheart Amanda Siziba at around 1am.
The incident occurred at Ntshamathe Business Centre under chief Sigola area where Ndimande was found having a 'nice' time with Amanda and two other women. The police spokesperson for Matabeleland South Sergeant Nkosilathi Sibanda said investigations were under way.
He said they had since arrested Ndimande, while Dunjana's body had been taken to Esigodini Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem. "Preliminary investigations so far reveal that Dunjana confronted Ndimande whom he found roasting meat at the business centre while in the company of
three women including Amanda.
"Dunjana accused his rival of snatching his lover. An argument then ensued resulting in the now deceased slapping Ndimande once in the face," he said. Sgt said the accused then drew a bayonet from his pocket and stabbed Dunjana in the left collar bone.
When he fell down the accused is said to have continued with the assault and stabbing his rival three times on the left side of the neck. "David suffered some serious injuries and as a result he collapsed and died instantly," he said.
He said the matter was then reported to the police leading to Ndimande's arrest and recovery of the bayonet. He said the suspect had been charged with murder and would soon appear in court.
Sgt Sibanda said the police were worried at the increase in cases where people continued to lose life unnecessarily. He urged members of the public to always seek better platforms to settle disputes rather than resorting to violence.
The incident comes a few months after the brutal murder of a Gwanda-based police officer by an unknown suspect while attempting to stop a fight at a nightclub in Phakama suburb.
