A prophet from Zvakazarurwa Apostolic Church in Bulawayo's Magwegwe suburb on Monday appeared in court facing charges of raping a fellow church member's wife.

The prophet allegedly raped the woman following a three-day long fasting regime which he has prescribed for her ailment.

Prophet Fanuel Mututu (39) of House Number 766/2 Old Magwegwe who appeared before Mr Willard Maphios Moyo at Western Commonage Court, wasn not asked to plead. He was remanded in custody to 30 May.

The prosecutor Ms Fiona Ncube said sometime in March, the woman's husband, who is a member of the church, accompanied his wife to Mututu so that he could pray for her. The court heard that the woman claimed that she was seeing visions at night and needed spiritual help.

Prophet Mututu allegedly told the couple that the woman was being tormented by a demon which needed to be exorcised through prayer at a rocky and bushy area. The 'supposed to be' Man of God told the complainant that she should come for a three-day fasting and prayer session.

It is alleged that on 26 March, the complainant went to Prophet Mututu's house and he took her to the bush near Kelvin West industrial area where he ordered her to pray before he left the woman alone. Later on, Prophet Mututu went back to the site at around 4pm and instructed the woman to break and go home.

On the last day of fasting and prayer on 28 March, Prophet Mututu allegedly went to where the woman was praying at about 12 noon and told her that she was supposed to dismiss early. He allegedly started praying for her and at the same time proposing love to her.

When the woman turned down his proposal, Prophet Mututu allegedly started fondling her amid threats that he would pray for her death if she refused, the court heard. The woman is said to have screamed but Prophet Mututu closed her mouth using his hand and raped her once.

The woman only reported her rape ordeal to her husband on Tuesday last week, roughly two weeks later and a report was made to the police leading to Prophet Mututu's arrest.
