Bulawayo's state controlled tabloid newspaper B-Metro, two weeks ago opened a can of worms as the newspaper's undercover reporters exposed an unregistered abortion surgery in Cowdray Park.
It's reported that the surgery operates under the patronage of a self proclaimed doctor who is believed to be a former nurse. The undercover reporters visited the 'Doctor' under the guise of a couple seeking an abortion.
The 'Doctor', aware that abortion is illegal in Zimbabwe is believed to be very vigilant in ascertaining whether clients are genuine or not but he seems to have fallen for the reporters' trick.
He informed them that a consultation fee of 200 rand and the abortion fee was $200 is required for an abortion followed by another $80 charge to clean the uterus.
After an abortion patients are strongly advised not to tell anyone about the surgery or the abortion as the whole exercise is still illegal in Zimbabwe. However, neighbours of the 'Doctor' have reported several girls coming to visit the doctor for abortions and some of the girls are still at school.
