POLICE in Matabeleland region have received five BMW highway patrol cars from the Police General Headquarters in Harare, aimed at improving the force's efficiency in the region.
The national traffic police spokesperson confirmed the development yesterday.
Inspector Tigere Chigome said police received the highway patrol cars after years of facing challenges in resources.
The five cars are part of the 40 top-of-the-range BMWs to patrol all major highways to curb road carnage this festive season.
The vehicles ' unveiled last week ' were bought in South Africa.
"After years of having limited resources the BMWs come as a relief to the organisation. The Matabeleland region received five BMWs to patrol the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road, Bulawayo-Plumtree, Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road and the other two will be patrolling the central business district."
He said the vehicles came at a time when police were embarking on festive season operations to reduce road carnage and ensure a crime-free holiday.
"The vehicles come at the right time where police officers are already on the ground for festive season operations. They will patrol the region until there is sanity on our roads," said Insp Chigome.
He said the vehicles were equipped with detectors and would assist with quick reaction.
"They are fully equipped with speed detectors for those speeding and they are also there to assist with quick reaction in armed robbery cases," he said.
Insp Chigome said the vehicles had been given to the region on a permanent basis and would not be withdrawn after the holiday.
