CID officer assaults colleagues

A POLICE officer attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (Minerals) section in Bulawayo was yesterday arraigned before the courts for allegedly teaming up with a friend to assault patrol officers who had arrested his colleague.
Joseman Zvikava (27) who is a police officer and Privilege Pfumo (27) of 17 Murphy Road, Kingsdale suburb pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and defeating the course of justice when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Sibongile Msipa.
They were remanded out of custody to 18 June on $20 bail each.
The prosecutor, Mr Malvern Nzombe said on 27 May at about 10.30pm, the three complainants who are police officers were on patrol along Lobengula Street when they arrested the accused's friend, Raymond Mutapafira, for interfering with their operations.
They took Mutapafira to the Bulawayo Licence Inspectorate. Zvikava and Pfumo followed their friend to the police station.
The court heard that on arrival, Zvikava confronted one of the complainants and ordered them to release Mutapafira.
One of the police officers, a Sergeant Maphosa tried to intervene during which an altercation ensued between him and the two accused persons.
Zvikava allegedly punched Sergeant Maphosa with a fist before his accomplice joined in and they assaulted Maphosa.
Other police officers managed to subdue the two men leading to their arrest.
