The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has been given the go ahead by government to recruit health workers to boost its staff which had depleted over the years.
Speaking during the Bulawayo Provincial World Tuberculosis Day commemorations at Barbourfileds Stadium, Bulawayo mayor Thaba Moyo said government has authorised the recruitment of 30 general nurses to fill up vacant posts.
Cllr Thaba Moyo said the local authority has engaged government to pay council nurses.
"We asked government to take care of the nurses' salaries because of budget constraints, their main worry was that nurses on the council pay roll are paid more than those in government. We agreed that they pay them the minimum wage and we top up," he said.
Council run clinics have been operating on a skeletal staff affecting service delivery.
