A 30-YEAR-OLD man was yesterday sentenced to four months in jail for brutally assaulting and seriously injuring his mother before shoving her under the bed.
The man accused his mother of abusing his siblings during his absence. George Gokoko of House Number 6676 in Nkulumane, Bulawayo, was convicted on his own plea of guilty to assault by West Commonage magistrate Mr Victor Mpofu and sentenced to 12 months in prison.
However, Mr Mpofu suspended eight months of the sentence for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within that period.
When the magistrate asked Gokoko why he assaulted his mother and fled, he replied: "Your Worship, I wanted to discipline my mother for constantly abusing my siblings. My younger brothers and sisters would always call me while I was in South Africa complaining about my mother who was ill-treating them.
"Soon after committing the offence, I fled from the scene for fear of being attacked by neighbours as my mother was screaming, alleging that I was raping her."
The prosecutor, Ms Ruvimbo Chanduru, said on 9 March, Gokoko who is based in South Africa arrived home at around 1 am and found the gate locked. He threw a stone on the roof of his mother's house so that she could wake up.
When no one came to unlock the gate, Gokoko destroyed the padlock and entered the yard.
Gokoko broke the door lock before storming into his mother's bedroom.
He found her sitting on the edge of her bed and he confronted the woman accusing her of abusing his siblings. An altercation ensued between the two during which Gokoko hit his mother in the head and she fell down.
He went on to stamp on his mother's legs and continued to assault her with a stick resulting in her sustaining a fractured leg. Gokoko then pushed her under the bed and fled leaving her writhing in pain.
The woman managed to crawl out of the house and screamed prompting neighbours to come to her rescue. She was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital and a report was made to the police leading to Gokoko's arrest.
