A Bulawayo family from Emakhandeni suburb was left in shock when their father refused to negotiate lobola for his son because the daughter-in-law was from a Shona tribe.
Ephraim Tshabangu (28) and Cythia Zvirevo (23) have been in a relationship for more than two years and when they decided to take their relationship to the next level, things went terribly wrong.
It is reported that Tshabangu had arranged to meet with his in-laws for lobola negotiations on 25 May but he got the shock of his life when his father refused to take part because their daughter-in-law was not a Ndebele woman.
It is said that on the scheduled date, Ephraim's father refused to accompany his son to his in-laws for negotiations and threatened to disown him if ever he marries the Shona woman without his blessings. Having prepared for the big day, the Zvirevo family waited in vain as their future in-laws did not pitch up for the event.
"I love Cynthia and we have spent more than two years together. We planned this big day together and regardless of that she is Shona, I am willing to take her as my wife. But from nowhere my father shattered the dreams I have with her, and I doubt her family will forgive me because of what my father did," he said.
He further asserted that he was going through a rough patch in his life, as he was forced to choose between Cynthia and his father.
When reached for comment, Ephraim's father said he was not going to allow 'such behaviour' from his son and threatened to disown him if her decided to go on with the marriage without his blessings.
