TWO men allegedly pounced on Qalisa Retirement Village in Bulawayo's Suburbs and robbed six residents of their valuables and cash amounting to $20 570 at gunpoint.

The two jumped over a pre-cast wall at the enclosed residence and handcuffed an unsuspecting security guard who was manning the entrance while two of his colleagues were on patrol.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident, saying it occurred at about 2am on Friday.

He said investigations were under way.

"We are investigating a case where two men brandishing pistols raided a retirement village at Qalisa.
"They robbed six residents of a total of $20 550 and valuables, which included a watch, a gold bracelet, three cell phones and R200," said Insp Moyo.

Soon after committing the offence, the suspects got away using a vehicle belonging to the security firm guarding the premises.

One of the security guards who was on patrol returned and activated the response alarm and his security company reacted by  sending some guards who unfortunately fell victim to the robbers as they were not armed.

Insp Moyo urged people to be on alert following an upsurge in robbery cases in the city.

"As police we would like to urge the public to desist from keeping large sums of money at their homes as that is very risky. In fact they should utilise banks as money is what robbers mainly target," he said.
