CITY OF BULAWAYO
PRESS RELEASE
UPSURGE IN WATER CONSUMPTION
The City of Bulawayo has reported an upsurge in water consumption, following the relaxation of the water shedding program from 72 hours to 48 hours.
The City's water consumption shot up to 125 Ml on Thursday 3 October 2013 from previous average of 96 Ml per day. The city's present capacity to supply water is about 112 Ml per day and therefore will not cope for long when demand far exceeds this level.
As at Friday 4th October 2013, Tuli reservoir was at 10 feet down from maximum of 18 feet and if demand from this reservoir remains high the city will experience water shortages in the eastern suburbs before shedding again next Monday on 7th October 2013.
Although the shedding program has been relaxed to 48 hours per week, consumers should however continue to conserve water and use it sparingly. Should consumption remain high, water shedding may need to be increased so as to stretch the limited supply to the next rain season.
Council urges all consumers to continue conserving and using water sparingly so as to avoid rapid depletion. It should be noted that supplies are still way below demand.
