A WhaWha Prison inmate was arrested a few days after his release for allegedly fatally striking an 85-year-old man with an axe.
Tonic Manjona (27) a theft convict was reportedly on his way home from WhaWha Prison when he stormed into the elderly man's kitchen hut looking for sadza only to find the now deceased, Mr Masvoreka Mavengano Ushe (85) having just finished eating his supper.
Manjona of Village Nyika Chief Nhema Shuruwgi was yesterday arraigned before Shurugwi magistrate, Mrs Evia Matura facing a murder charge.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 21 October 2013.
For the State, Miss Betha Bore told the court that on 16 September 2013, Manjona, a habitual thief, was released from WhaWha Prison after serving his sentence for a theft charge.
Miss Bore said Manjona then walked to his rural home in Shurugwi and spent six days on the road.
The court heard that on 22 September, Manjona arrived at his home village Nyika, at around 8pm and passed through the now deceased Mr Ushe's homestead and entered into the elderly man's kitchen hut.
Miss Bore said while in the kitchen hut, Manjona found Mr Ushe who was staying alone just finishing eating his supper.
The court heard that Manjona who was armed with an axe became violent when he failed to get food to eat and struck Mr Ushe twice on the head and once on the left eye.
Mr Ushe died on the spot, the court heard. Miss Bore said Manjona took a cock which was in the kitchen, a salt shaker and two suits belonging to the now deceased before he went into hiding at a nearby bush in the same village.
She said Manjona was only arrested on Friday last week while hiding in the bush leading to the recovery of two suits and a salt shaker that he stole from the now deceased. Ends
