A 41-year-old man from Zvishavane was found dead on Monday morning at a flat along Robert Mugabe Way between Masotsha Ndlovu Avenue and Connaught Avenue in Bulawayo.
Enock Mahozo Maguru Mugabe was found dead by his wife Lizzy Lunga at Yolande Court occupied by two unidentified women.
According to Lizzy's sister, Maria Lunga, Mugabe - a staunch Highlanders supporter - was in Bulawayo to watch the epic clash between Bosso and Dynamos on Sunday and was last heard from on Sunday trying to get a lift to Zvishavane at Max Garage.
She said when his wife tried to call him later in the evening to laugh at him over his team's loss, his phone rang unanswered and was later unreachable.
She said they then went to bed hoping to get hold of him in the morning.
"At around midday on Monday, Lizzy called crying telling me that a woman phoned saying her husband was at her flat but in a critical condition," Maria said.
"She called her aunt to accompany her to Yolande Court and they hired a taxi.
"On arrival, a lady summoned them into the flat, but they were afraid so they asked the taxi driver to accompany them inside.
"When they got inside, the lady closed the door and removed the keys.
"They proceeded to an empty bedroom and found Mugabe lying facing down on a mattress, with another lady inside.
"The wife called him, but got no response. They said he was only wearing his underwear," Lunga said.
She said they asked why Mugabe was in his underwear and the women said they stripped him because he had wet himself. But his underwear was dry.
When asked to narrate what had happened, Lunga said the two women claimed to have found Mugabe dead drunk lying along Robert Mugabe Way around 4am and they carried him to their second floor flat with the assistance of an unidentified man.
Lunga said the police were called and after assessing the situation they radioed homicide detectives. The detectives in turn called the Criminal Investigations Department who questioned the two ladies before leaving.
Mugabe's body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post mortem whose results had still not been released by yesterday.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed Mugabe's death, but declined to divulge more details saying the case was still under investigation.
However, Moyo hinted that Mugabe could have succumbed to an undisclosed illness and police did not suspect any foul play. But Lunga said Mugabe had been fit.
When Southern Eye visited Yolande Court yesterday afternoon, residents claimed that the two women concerned survived on prostitution.
"We usually see different kinds of men going into that flat," one resident said.
"They even do their thing during the day. Sometimes we hear people fighting at night."
