Bulawayo residents have said developing the city in terms of its aesthetic value is long overdue and the local authority should spearhead such initiatives, which will in turn create jobs, Radio Dialogue reported.
Speaking during a consultation meeting yesterday on the expected construction of a $56 million termini rank complex at Basch Street Terminus, commonly known as Egodini, residents said despite the fact that informal traders and transporters will be affected by work taking place there, more job opportunities will be created.
A South African civil engineering firm Tearracota (Pvt) Ltd was early this awarded the tender to convert Egodini, into a regional public transport hub by the city council.
Bulawayo Mayor councillor Martin Moyo said the construction of the complex was a recommendable development and residents should be keen to take advantage of opportunities that will arise when the $56 million dollar project kicks of later this year.
Ward 1 councillor councillor Mlandu Ncube said residents should support this initiative and ensure that they do not scare potential investors interested in working with the local authority to embark on the project.
"If we fail to show positivity towards this project, some cities might take our idea away, and that is not good for the city's development," said Ncube.
He said interruption of people's day to day activities was inevitable given the project of that magnitude.
"The local authority is looking forward to this project and we hope residents also do the same. It will contribute immernsely to the growth of this city," said Ncube.
Bulawayo Public Transporters Association (BUPTA) chairman Strike Ndlovu welcomed the development despite fears of an uncertain future of the transport business.
"The project will improve our rank and that is a definite positive for us but we will be keen to know where will we be working from in the time being," said Ndlovu.
Egodini is used by commuter operators plying mostly western suburbs routes and is the busiest in the city alongside Renkini Long-Distance bus rank.
