MDC-T Bulawayo provincial organising secretary Tsepiso Mpofu was yesterday arrested for allegedly calling President Robert Mugabe an old goat.

Mpofu was briefly detained at Mzilikazi Police Station yesterday and was later released. He was ordered to report to the police station for the recording of a warned and cautioned statement.

Mpofu's lawyer Kossam Ncube of Ncube and Partners said his client had just been expressing his views.

"As I far as I know, he said Mugabe is making people go hungry and he is not fulfilling his promises," Ncube said.

"I'm not aware that he said Mugabe is an old goat and as we speak he has since been released. He will tomorrow (today) go back to the station for the recording of a warned and cautioned statement," he said.

Mpofu is likely to be charged with law that deals with undermining the authority of the president.

Over the past few months, a number of people have been arrested and arraigned in the courts countrywide for uttering words that undermine the authority of the President. Former Masvingo Central Mp Tongai Matutu was summoned to court in Gweru on a similar charge.

However, the Constitutional Court recently made a landmark ruling saying some sections of the Criminal Law (Co-rdification and Reform Act) were unconstitutional.
