A BULAWAYO-BASED company, Sanctifyd, is embarking on a big project of resuscitating and redeveloping the Centenary Park along Leopold Takawira Avenue.

The resuscitation process will involve a new layout of the playground, children's toilets, provision of shaded sitting facilities, installation of solar lights, development of a half-court basketball arena and a beach volleyball court.

Sanctifyd director Nkululeko Ncube said his company had identified the Amphitheatre playground as one facility that was in need of urgent resuscitation.

"We want to see the recreational facility in Bulawayo returning to its former glory," Ncube said.

He said the current state of the park was decrepit and there was need to put up modern apparatus.

The park project will cost about $40 000 and will cater for children from the ages of one year up to adults of 60.

"The park has been left idle and the lack of lights makes the area a dangerous place for children. There are rusted rides, broken swings, no water to drink and no toilets.

"These are some of the reasons we see the need for a free and safe child-friendly playground," Ncube said.

He also revealed that Sanctifyd would embark on public campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of preserving public facilities for use by future generations.

The project is set to be complete in the first quarter of 2014 earmarked for the official launch. Sanctifyd will also look at reviving the grassroot swimming academy project when the park project is completed.

The grassroot swimming project is to provide former Group B schools with swimming pools.
