A 21-year-old Bulawayo man, irked by his drinking mate who kept making fun out of him following his team's loss in a football match, went wild and struck him with a bottle of beer causing facial bruises.

The offended man, Terrence Mzila of House Number 5369 Magwegwe West was convicted on his own plea of guilty to assault by Western Commonage magistrate Mr Willard Maphios Moyo.

He was fined $200 or two months in jail.

Mzila was also slapped with another two months in jail, which was wholly suspended for five years.

Prosecuting, Mr Kinston Mkanganwi said on 27 October at about 7.30pm, the victim Mr Blessed Munemo (32) and Mzila were drinking together at a bottle store in Magwegwe West.

Munemo, a Dynamos FC fan started celebrating the win of his team over Highlanders FC and at the same time he mocked Mzila following his team's defeat.

The court was told that Mzila tried to reprimand his drinking mate but Munemo who was in a celebratory mood turned a deaf ear as he continued with his antics.

The two men were locked in a heated argument which degenerated into a fist-fight.

Mr Moyo heard how Mzila flew into rage and struck Munemo with an empty bottle in the face and forehead resulting in him sustaining bruises.

He was rushed to the hospital and Mzila was arrested following a police report.
