OVER 20 000 desperate Bulawayo home seekers may have been duped by bogus land developers selling residential stands in Upper Rangemore.
According to ZimMetro.net, twelve land developers reportedly illegally acquired land working with two government officials (name withheld).
A number of organisations among them NUST, Zimbabwe Teachers' Union, Kango, Zimpapers and Pretoria Portland Cement assisted their employees to get residential stands from private land developers on arrangements that people paid varying installments ranging from $112 a months to $250 depending on the size of a stand one wants.
A 200 square metre stand was priced at an average of $3 000.
The matter came to light after government launched a land audit which unearthed the irregularities.
Umguza Rural District Council chief executive officer, Mr Collen Moyo said the Government had set up a team of three senior officials, headed by Matabeleland South Provincial Administrator, Mr Midard Khumalo to probe the suspected rip-off.
Property development in the affected area has since been stopped and Criminal Investigations Department is said to be investigating the possibility of fraud.
