The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) Friday received rare praise from Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Ignatius Chombo who commended the council for performing fairly well in service delivery.
Chombo paid a courtesy visit to the council where he met with Councillors, metropolitan provincial members and officials from other government departments, to share with the city's stakeholders the scope and thrust of the new government.
The meeting was also meant to brief the new Councillors on their mandate and role in local governance structures.
"Generally, the state of affairs regarding solid waste management in the Bulawayo city is pleasing, however throughout the country it is worrisome as the public continue to indiscriminately litter the environment while on the other hand refuse collection systems in councils are weak and inconsistent."
Chombo said that all local authorities should come up with a framework that will guarantee sustainable solid waste management.
