NewsDay fails to pay November salaries

Alpha Media Holdings, publishers of Newsday, The Standard and The Zimbabwe Independent has been hit by hard times, amid revelations that the company failed to pay workers' salaries for November.
The workers have also had their medical aid benefits and cellphone allowances cut.
Workers from The Zimbabwe Independent yesterday approached group chief executive Mr Raphael Khumalo asking for their salaries and threatening to go on strike if their concerns were not attended to, the Herald reported.
"Workers from our advertising firm Munn Marketing, our printers, drivers and Strands are usually paid on the 21st of each month, but up to now they are still to receive their salaries," said an Alpha Media Holdings employee.
"Newsday employees and those of other publications receive their salaries on the 26th of each month, but there are no indications that our pay is coming.
"The human resources department has informed us that salaries for the employees who get them on the 21st are still to be processed as the company does not have money, so we do not even know if we are going to get paid."
Another employee said the company's human resources department told them that they were not going to get their salaries on time, without disclosing the reasons.
"Three weeks ago we had a meeting with the chief executive where he told us that the company was facing some challenges," said the employee.
"He told us that the situation may force the company to stagger our salaries to prioritise critical areas."
The group's editor-in-chief Vincent Kahiya referred questions to Mr Khumalo who could not be reached as he was said to be out of office.
AMH announced recently that it was retrenching some of its staff and urged those willing to come forward to claim packages.
But the offer failed to excite the workers because the packages and the payment plans were not made clear.
