PREPARATIONS to mark the Bulawayo City Council's 120-year celebrations in June 2014 have started six months ahead of the commemorations.

Bulawayo town clerk Middleton Nyoni indicated in a notice that preparations were underway to mark the founding of Bulawayo in 1894. The city held its centenary celebrations in 1994.

"It has been a practice in the past celebrations to organise functions or entertainment in the city to mark the anniversary celebrations in order to engender a befitting status to the City of Kings," Nyoni said.

"The city is inviting all interested creative persons to design a logo for the 120-year anniversary of the founding of Bulawayo as a modern settlement. The selected logo will be used as the icon for the anniversary celebrations and will be used as an official logo for all programmed activities."

The celebrations will come at a time the city has suffered heavy deindustrialisation and abandoned buildings as water shortages hound the city's economy and residents alike.

Nyoni asked all those interested in taking part in the celebrations to submit their written proposals to him by Friday December 20.
